We do not enter into any agreements with our clients regarding the handling of animals. We ask clients with dogs to ensure that they have provided us with clear written instructions regarding their animals. On occasion, Armed Response Officers may be asked to move or chase away dogs that are considered threatening, aggressive, or dangerous.
As a general rule, Armed Response Officers will not enter a property if there is any risk of being attacked by an animal. They are not expected to deal with dogs at all. If asked to attend to a problem animal, an Armed Response Officer should first assess the situation and direct the client accordingly. They should make it clear that they may not be able to assist and must inform control room of the issue.
The control room may be able to contact the dog's owner or a neighbour familiar with the dog. If the officer believes they can assist in resolving the issue, they may do so, but they are under no obligation from the company to handle the situation. Some officers may be more comfortable with dogs than others, and backup may be required to deal with the problem.
On occasion, an agitated and scared client may expect the officer to deal with the dog(s). In such cases, the officer should inform the client to contact control room, who will confirm the company policy.
